Since using Software Update to upgrade from OSX 10.3.5 to 10.3.6 (Build 7R28) on 06-11-2004, I've had a large number of problems both with speed and unexpected application (mainly Photoshop CS) and system crashes on both my Macs - G4 PB 1.5GHz and G5 PowerMac 2.0GHz DP. It would seem that I'm not the only one from reading through some of the posts on this forum.
Neither computer has had any memory installed recently or indeed any hardware changes. The PB has 1Gb RAM (2 x 512Mb) and PM has 1.5Gb RAM (2 x 256Mb + 2 x 512Mb)
Apart from the usual Disk Utility Permissions Verify/Repair I haven't done anything else to remedy this apparent problem with the 10.3.6 update. I've been getting problems with the Finder, opening multiple image files in Photoshop CS - SPOD and application crashes particularly when batch processing.
I'm a professional photographer and both computers are running Photoshop CS or PS 7.0 intensively/continuously for many hours at a time. Initially after purchasing the new PB I thought heat may have been a problem and I now prop up the back of the PB to alleviate this. I'm beginning to think that there may be a problem with OSX 10.3.5 and 10.3.6. I ran 10.2 to 10.3.4 without a single system or application (i.e.Photoshop) crash for over a year.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Pete

did you use software update on both machines? or have they both been updated from one download...
just wondering what the common thread (forgive the pun) is.
i've run the update for five people without problems, including photoshop/final cut/etc users.
worse case scenario: archive & install.
any shareware apps running? (again, looking for common ground between both machines).

Thanks for the reply.
Both machines and also my older PowerMac G4 500DP, which hasn't been run since the update, were all updated via Software Update separately. They're all connected via a Netgear router.
Usually, there haven't been any other apps running at the time of the crashes/freezes. Indeed yesterday evening the G5 froze about 10 minutes after rebooting with no apps open - the mouse locked up and I returned to my office with the G5 fans sounding like an aircraft about to take off....
The most common crash has been the "You need to restart your computer...." with the screen slightly greyed out.
A full archive and install will take an enormous amount of time - the G5 has two 160 Gb HDs - and if possible I'd want to avoid this.

I have been experiencing the same problems with 10.3.6 Anyone have any clues on what causes this crash?

Increasingly, Apple OS updates seem to cause more problems than they solve.

I don't know about that. For some but I've yet to encounter any problems with any updates on any of my Macs dating back to '98. Mac OS 8.0 to Mac OS X 10.3.6.
I don't know why people have all these problems.

What USB-devices are connected to your system?
"com.apple.iokit.IOUSBFamily(2.1.1)" could point to an USB-related problem.
Nexus5.

Run Disk Repair ...
These steps will check for, and usually repair, any corruption on your OS X boot volume
(1) Boot from your Mac OS X Install Disc 1 CD. Put CD in drive, wait for it to show up on the desktop, then go to upper left of screen under the Apple menu and choose restart. Immediately hold the "c" key down until you see the apple logo.
(2) When the Installer window opens, select Installer > Disk Utility from the Apple® menu bar.
(3) When the Disk Utility window opens, select "Macintosh HD" in the list on the left.
(4) Select the First Aid tab on the right
(5) Select the "Repair Disk" button on the lower right of the screen.
If errors are returned repeat this process 2 or 3 times untill they are gone.
If you still get errors then you will need to use a third-party disk utility to repair your Mac OS X boot volume, such as Alsoft® Disk Warrior®, or either of Micromat Drive 10™ or TechTool Pro®.
(6) After Repair Disk completes, quit Disk Utility. Focus returns to Installer.
(7) Quit the Installer. When prompted select Restart.
If this doesn't help you could try downloading the update again ..
First remove the install pkg ..
HD/Library/Receipts/update you just installed
Don't forget to repair permissions both before and after updates ..
