This is no longer a Safari problem for me as when it happens no web browser on my Mac can see sites, yet Mail can connect fine and netnewswirelite picks up it's feeds fine. It's all happened since that security update, and I thought I'd cracked it because I'd gone several days without the problem, now it's back ALL the time.

There is already another thread on this that was started a long time before yours. Also, 10.3.7 is due soon, and it fixes it.

How do you know 10.3.7 fixes it; and if it does what's your best guestimate as to when we'll see that bad boy because this "DNS issue" is driving me nuts. I've managed to semi-fix the issue at home, but at work... ai yi yi!

Where is this thread? A quick search here for "DNS" and browsing the networking forums reveals nothing of interest.

Thanks. It seems that thread is inappropriately named/placed since it seems to be more of an OS issue than just a Safari issue.

Well, that explains why searching for DNS doesn't help!

It's not a Safari problem, and for the most part it's not an OS problem: it's a problem with the transition to IPv6 DNS resolution. This transition seems to be causing a lot of problems, since it seems to be affecting resolution times, and lots of applications don't seem to exactly know how to deal with these changes. Just to make it clear -- this problem does not just affect web browsers. I get it all the time with Eudora. More likely, the reason you don't see it with Mail is that your ISP's own DNS server is the "authoritative" DNS server for their own email server, so it knows the right answer already. For web requests, their DNS server must communicate with other DNS servers, and clearly that process is not working quite as it should.

Apparently, it is possible to tweak the OS to overcome some of this problem, and that's what will happen in future versions of Mac OS X.

For what it's worth, this problem has also been affecting other operating systems, including Windows.

Then why did it start with that software update then? And I've not heard any PC users moaning about it. It's a joke, my PowerBook never does it yet my G5 is horrendous, both are on 10.3.6 now.

I have had posts removed from the Apple discussion forums for getting a little too wild about this issue.

I hope they fix it soon. I am too mobile to keep manually adding these addresses.

Sorry I would have replied sooner IF THIS DAMN MAC WAS USABLE!!!!

Seriously, I don't think I've ever been so hacked off with a Mac since before OS X. This is unreal that this is happening since that security update. And I don't accept that it's not a Mac issue, it is and it needs fixing.

Sorry I'm so stressed but I need the net for my job.

God I wish I knew! It's getting to the point where I'm going to have set up my PowerBook and have it on my desk just so I can still use the web. Yet last week I went 5 days of perfect web use, since then it's farcical. This G5 is almost unusable now. Yet I can pick up mail, play call of duty online, use ichat...

What a JOKE. I have to keep juggling between manual and auto DNS, Ip6 on and off just to get the system back to life.

For me it is ok on my G5 but my G4 cube has problems. I had them for a while on the G5 but then I used the Safari 1.3 beta and it seems to have gone away. Annoying.

Touch wood, I seem to have cured it for the time being. I put the DNS numbers into my router, as I've tried before, but I changed the DNS servers on the Mac to be the address of the router. All seems to be working at the moment...

Well since I tweaked my router (see post above) this Mac has been fine so I recommend people try that method.

I never had any DNS issues until 10.3.7 came out. Now it's VERY slow. Once a site loads, additional pages from that site load very quickly, I'm assuming because the IP address is cached. Any thoughts?

I'm now on 10.3.7 and have left my router as before and it's still fine.

I had this problem with 10.3.6 on one of my machines at home... it does indeed seem to be fixed by 10.3.7

For me, it wasn't that big of a deal, it was just annoying. If a web page failed to load, i just hit return, it tried it again, and it'd work. Still... a silly bug, I agree.

10.3.7 solved this issue for us. Works now just like it used to and as it should.
