Twice within the last week my PowerBook has refused to go to sleep, even when I quit all running apps. I haven't checked Activity Monitor to see what might be preventing it, but any idea what processes might hijack the ability to sleep?

Sleep comes and goes on my rig. I can find no rhyme or reason.

Sometimes you have to just wait a while after you tell it to sleep. It might seem like it's not going to, but it will eventually...

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Not so much at your answer, but that it works this way. I can't really wait 10 minutes for it to go to sleep when I've got to get out the door to go to work. What is this--Windows 98?

I do keep up on maintenance, and I reset the PRAM after it did this the first time.

Thanks for the help anyhoo.

If I use the button on my LCD, it goes right to sleep. It just won't do it by itself. I'm guessing the laptops don't have a button to push?

Just close the lid and they will go to sleep.

yep - just close the lid - even if it takes it a full minute (10 would definitely be excessive) to get to a full sleep - it's still on its way there - there's no need to watch it.

ps - if you have the iDisk auto-syncing/mirroring stuff on, it can cause slowness and sleep problems when you're not in range of a network. this can usually be fixed by either turning off the syncing or just turning off airport itself.

Not Sleeping Right .. first thing .. repair permissions .. reboot.

Delete Power Management Prefs
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist.

Fax Setting Disturbing Sleep
The solution is to open the Print & Fax pane of System Preferences and uncheck the "receive faxes on this computer" box. Having fax reception enabled prevents your Macinosh from going into sleep mode normally.

Try these energy saver settings ..
Preferences/Energy Saver
"Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for" .. at Never
Check "Put the hard disk to sleep when possible".

Some other suggestions ...

Reset the PMU (Power Management Unit). This often fixes sleep-related problems.

See the Apple support site for details.

I'm convinced that this is an issue with OS X that Apple needs to address. My computer at work won't sleep on its own unless I am not running any apps. My iBook won't sleep either unless I am not running anything. I have fiddled with this extensively and have read posts all over the place and am convinced that OS X won't sleep when certain apps or a combination of apps are running. It is annoying as all heck and does not make any sense. I hope Apple addresses this issue with the next update or with 10.3.4.

I have this problem too on my 867G4 Tower. Hitting the screen button or using the menu Sleep function seems to only work 25% of the time. Otherwise it powers down but immediately powers back up.

Try turning off auto-check in Mail.

Some apps prevent the computer from sleeping. I believe AOL is one of those.

The computer won't automatically sleep if there are applications running that keep it awake. This is a feature, not a bug. If it really matters to you, you'll need to have to replace the offending applications.

I can get my iMac G5 to go to sleep, only to have it wake itself up about two seconds later every single time. Is this happening to anyone else, or do your machines not sleep even for a second?

Right from the beginning of my May 04 iMac 20" screen machine, it would never go into real sleep when I had it set to do this on its own. The screen would sleep fine. but the HD would never spin down nor would the fans sleep.
But if I put it to sleep from the menu, it would do just that, a proper spin down, no fan happy sleep.
Nobody, no forum, the place I bought it from, Apple, Applecare, whoever, the Mac gods in the sky, even the gurus at Boston MacWorld last summer, could ever figure this out. So I live with it, just sleep it with the menu. And let it do its monitor only sleep during the daytime.
If anyone has ever figured this out, we would really like to know, and post the solution back to all our classmates, and all the people who are wondering about this.
It is not a real problem at all, and we all LOVE our new Macs. Just a curiosity.
Jane

edit, forgot to say that we did all the things listed above, no fax stuff, no programs running, on and on

Could this be a hardware problem? I've noticed that even if I log out my computer won't go to sleep. Are there any apps running while I am logged out?
