'open with' lost after maintenance

hello all,

After doing my usual maintenance (repair permissions, cron scripts & cache cleaning (cocktail)), if I log off and back on, this problem doens't show.

But if I restart, all the 'open with' (or any application for all that matters) are gone...

In other words, if I double click a file such as a doc, it won't find word (and in the get info window, there are no applications in the list - the ones that would be used to open it...)

After opening word, it shows in the info window for the doc files...
(and gradually any other application that can open that type of document).

This happens to every file type... (the doc was just an example)

Why does this happen?

Is it the cache cleaning?
or the repair permissions?

Which file stores this type of info? (so I can back it up before the maintenance)

Your help is welcome! TIA!

This is obviously the cache cleaning. The caches have a purpose, you know.

I would like to urge everybody to refrain from doing overzealous "maintenance" stuff unless you have a real problem. At best this is unnecessary, and at worst it causes more problems than it solves.

I agree. Don't do the "cache cleaning" unless you are having problems.

I see...
I should test the different cleaning to verify if it is indeed the cache cleaning, but nice tip (about doing it if only really necessary)

Now, any clue on which file holds this info that is lost?
(I mean, it should be stored in some other form than a cache file...)
