Hi All,
I am having a difficult time here. My PB will not auto sleep after reset amount of time. I have tried trashing the PowerManagement.plist (as well as various other system .plists), full "clean up" with Onyx, boot into safe mode and try, detached all externals Iincluding USB, firewire, and external monitor/keyboard/mouse, as well as resetting the NVRAM. I am able to put it to sleep manually. I believe that this happened after the last software update a few days ago (Bluetooth and iCal updates). Any and all help would be much appreciated! Thanks.
PS-
Forgot to mention that I have a RevC PB 12", Combo, 768 RAM. OS X 10.3.6

You can try resetting the PMU.

I can't help, but I have the same problem on my Tibook. It just won't sleep. I've asked the same question, and tried all the options you have, even a clean reinstall, and it just won't do it.
It's not that unusual a problem. I have learned to be aware of it, and manually sleep the machine when on battery power.
Sorry not to be more help, but at least you're not alone.

Well,
I have tried resetting the PMU, PRAM, and NVRAM, and I have done a clean install of Panther (no third party apps or updates instaled) onto a partition on my external firewire drive. None allowed the Mac to auto sleep. Something else interesting... I am a full, retail install of Panther and when I tried to boot from CD, it would get stuck at the grey apple screen with a couple of small multicolored lines at a 90 degree angle to each other (like half of a sqare) next to the apple. I had to boot from the DVD that came with my PB. This is really strange as I can put my Mac to sleep manually. Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

Well, maybe this could be the culprit. My Energy Saver preferences do not stick either. Although, how this can affect a clean install with no updates yet installed, I have no idea.

how did you reset it? Did you go into open firmware to reset it? If not try that and see if that fixes it.

Not Sleeping Right .. first thing .. repair permissions .. reboot.
As a general rule ..
Before & After any software update .. Repair permissions: Close all open files and applications. Go to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and double click it. Then select "Macintosh HD" in the left panel and First Aid at the top. Then click on "Repair Permissions."
This may be the reason your install disk won't boot .. if it can you should then go and repair disk .
If that doesn't work
Try these energy saver settings ..
Preferences/Energy Saver
"Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for" .. at Never
Check "Put the hard disk to sleep when possible".
I use those settings on my iBook .. works like a charm ..
Some other info ..
Fax Setting Disturbing Sleep
The solution is to open the Print & Fax pane of System Preferences and uncheck the "receive faxes on this computer" box. Having fax reception enabled prevents your Macinosh from going into sleep mode normally.

The machine boots just fine. It just won't boot from a CD... the DVD that came with the PB will boot though. The Mac is not set up to received faxes, so that isn't it. I am well versed in OS X maintenance , so I regularly repair permissions and run the cron scripts. As for setting the Energy Saver settings to "never" sleep, doesn't that defeat the purpose that I am trying to do with my PB which is get it to sleep on its own? Or am I missing something? Thanks for the help though. I am looking at the link you provided.

The computer will still sleep ...
Putting the display to sleep separately and checking "put hard disk to sleep when Possible" in effect I think substitutes for "put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for". Although I don't know how long the "put hard disk to sleep when possible" waits during inactivity to sleep the disk.
If this is wrong perhaps someone can enlighten me because I've never quite understood it, but I've used this setting to resolve my sleep issues ..

I am confused. Is this supposed to allow my Mac to somehow enter into sleep automatically at some point? My external monitor and hard drives sleep, but I would like the PB itself to sleep automatically after a preset time.

Like I said ... it will sleep but I don't know when it kicks in .. all I know is this setting alleviates many sleep issues ...
It seem like we are getting the two machines mixed up although these settings will work for both ..
Also with the PB ... it will sleep automatically when you close the lid.

I understand that the machine will sleep when the lid is closed. However, I am running the PB with the lid closed now. I just want the Mac to sleep automatically when the lid IS closed. I'll keep trying your settings, but it has not auto slept the Mac as of yet. Thanks for the help.

If you have tried all the software fixes I reccomended, your next step might be to bring it into the shop ...

I have a feeling it is the new bluetooth firmware that I installed about a week or two ago. That would explain wy the problem persists even after the clean install. The sleep does work when done manually, just not automatically. Any others having this problem that just updated their BT firmware?
