Folks,

Do I really need OS X Server if I want Apache, IMAP etc?

Why not just buy OS X and compile Apache, imap, etc for free? I mean I'm very comfortable with configuring them via config files.

If I'm an "experianced Linux guy" why get Mac OS X Server if i don't need the gui config tools?

Are they different versions made specialy for Mac?

I can't think of a single reason for you to buy Mac OS X Server, then.

The big reason that pushes people onto MacOS X Server is the user and group management. Imagine that you have 500 users and divide them into 5 groups based on what sorts of things they are allowed to do. Some of those groups have only email, some can alter pages on the WebServer, some use the server as a location for their remote home directory so they can log into any of the managed clients on your network as if it were their own computer. This is where MacOS X Server is worth it.

If you are doing simple web serving, and can deal with setting up users (or virtual users) for your email server, then you don't need MacOS X Server. It might save you time in the setup process... but it might not. But it does not sound like you absolutely need it.

Thanx both of you.

At this point i only have 2 computers and 2 human users (not apachie, postfix etc.)

Sounds like I'll do just fine with out OS X Server.

However, if i had Mac OS X server, then these programs would be updated along with my system, when i did a system update, right?

Apache is included with 10.x client, as well. I do most things with the command line, too. Sometimes, there are conflicts -- I had problems installing other things apps, because of some little conflicts with config files, etc.

I wanted to replace the existing httpd with a freshly compiled one, because I was unable to enable server-side includes (there were threads about this here, with no solution). I think differences in the directory structure broke both -- I couldn't use either one of them. Maybe, with some better knowledge of the directory structure, I would have been able to replace it neatly.

Another thing I have heard is that the system prefs replace the firewall rules each time, so if you included custom modifications, I think they get lost when you change the prefs.

On a side note, if you're an experienced linux guy you'll be happy to know that a rather mature package management system has evolved for Mac OS X over the last few years: http://fink.sf.net/

I use a few Xserves with OS X server to do various lab serving and file-serving needs, but I definitely use a regular OS X client box to do bunches of web, ftp, ssh, etc. Good point, you really don't need OS X server unless you're doing large scale stuff, and at that point all those tools really do is make your like less of a living hell.

Hmm, I'm not sure it's for me then. If my suddenly ceased to be a living hell, I'd confused and lost.

Really? I was able to get them working with the default Apache install in about 5 minutes.

*Shrug.*
