While OS X has been pretty easy to pick for new users like me, it is these little problems that makes it so frustrating.. pls help!

Having finished downloaded the 10.3.6 update, Software Update began 'optimising the hard drive'. It went up to 85% fine and good and then.. I'm not too sure what happened, but this grayed out dialog popped up telling to restart my notebook. Maybe I was killing the RAM by doing too many things at once.

So I did just that, effectively cutting the software update short.. now, clicking on System Prefs makes it jump ONCE.. and nothing loads. Same thing for TextEdit. Restarting twice didnt solve the problem. I couldnt open System Preferences, whether from the Apple menu or from the dock.

Has anybody experienced a similar problem? I hope I do not have to reinstall Panther all over again.

Also: Regarding keychain, I forgot the password to the 'login' keychain. I tried using Reset Password from the Install Disc (even reseting the root password) but it doesnt seem to change the 'login' keychain password. This thing haunts me and prevents access to stuff I want to get to. How can I reset this pesky irritant?

Thanks again for your help, whoever you are! A fellow mac switcher is in despair..

EDIT: i have lost ALL the icons on the Menu Bar. There is no time, no user, no wireless, no speaker, no battery meter.

God, it gets worse. I have my Installer Disc inside. There's no drive mounted on the desktop. I cant eject.. the eject button doesnt work either..

What could be the cause of such a mess?

You could download the combo 10.3.6 installer after repairing any errors on your disk that would have been caused by the kernel panic you had.

http://www.apple.com/support/ is where you can find the download.
