I'm using a Logitech Cordless Mouse with my PB, as I'm REALLY used to the two buttons and the scroll wheel. Functionally it works fine.

However, I notice that the screen does not scroll "1 to 1" with the motion of the scroll wheel, so if I roll too much, the scroll goes way past where I wanted to go, but if I go too slow, then nothing (or very little) happens.

Also, the scrolling "jerks". I've tried the smooth-scrolling setting with not much noticible improvement.

Is there a setting I've missed? The scroll wheel on the mouse is a clicking-type. Could that be it?

If you have a slower computer it is possible that you send more scroll events than the application can do scroll redraws. This means the application will work off these events after you stopped scrolling with the mouse. It happens on Mac and on Windows (though Windows appears to be faster with scrolling so the situation is a little bit better there). Smooth scrolling makes the situation worse because it is actually a scroll animation which makes scrolling slower but smoother.

Updating to a G5 will solve this issue for you.

are you using logitech's software for the mouse?

this

i think there are some options to set there...

(cheaper than a move to a G5... )

If you have Logitec's software installed, go to the System Preferences under your Apple menu, and choose the Logitec preference pane. It should have an option to slow down the scrolling. If you're using the default OS mouse/trackpad driver, go to the keyboard and mouse control pane. Under the mouse tab, you can alter the acceleration of the pointer and the scroll wheel independently.

I slowed the scroll setting as you suggested, and it seems to help. Let me surf a bit and I'll let you know.

As for the Logitech driver, I haven't installed it. I don't have the disk, and all I did was plug the USB antenna and go.

BTW, do Bluetooth wireless mice require the external antenna too, or can they communicate through the internal antenna in the PB?

Ah! YES! MUCH better!

I had smooth scrolling set in both the OS and Firefox. With both of them turned off and the scroll speed to minimum, it seems to be working VERY much better!

Thanks so much! Check one more gripe off my list!

Smooth Scrolling bugs me because even on a 700 G4, it scrolls slowly and jerkily and you scroll too much thinking it's not working, then it catches up and you're two pages below where you wanted to be.

I turned them off too first thing.

Also, if you're using Firefox, it doesn't properly obey the OS setting for scroll speed. To fix it, open a Firefox window and type about:config in the address bar. Then search for "mousewheel", and find the item that is "mousewheel.withnokey.sysnumlines". Change it to false. Then find "mousewheel.withnokey.numlines", and set it to what feels best for you.
