Be wary of installing this update. Under certain circumstances after applying the update you will not be able to restart and login because the boot process will stall while starting the login window. This even occurs in safe boot mode. For more information go to the Apple discussion boards and search for: Problems Security Update 2004-12-02.

Yup - I've had this problem.
I had an install of the spoken interface preview on my machine though, which I assume is what caused it (Apple notified me not to install any updates while I had this installed, but I just through caution to the wind and carried on without encountering any problems until now).
I've fixed the problem with an archive and install.

That's it! I had forgotten I had that installed. I fixed the login thing in Target Disk mode. But I can't get any Apple software to launch using firefox at this point. I may be ding an Archive and install myself unless I can find a way to try to back out the spoken interface first.

At the time the info from Apple said that the spoken interface preview couldn't be removed, the only way was to resinstall Panther.

Apple was pretty dumb to go this route with this Spoken Interface Preview...why not an uninstaller?

Probably because it altered so many low-level system things that to create an uninstaller would have been too much extra work (work that could have been better spent on actually developing the feature).
Besides, like ALL prerelease software, you shouldn't be using it in a production environment (where you do your day to day work) anyway, (unless you're a developer, in which case you have a prerelease development environment SEPARATE from your normal working environment).
Maintaining a "sandbox" for prerelease software makes having an uninstaller unnecessary.

I don't think that's the problem. I've had Spoken Interface installed since not long after its release, and this update is working fine for me.
