ok my question is how do I make my jpeg, mpeg, ect. look like an actual miniature picture instead of a little box that has the words jpeg written on it and a preview pic above it? i really dont liek the fact that it does that, on internet explorer if i saved a picture it had the picture being shown, but I strongly dislike internet explorer and prefer safari, but on safari whenever i save a pic it does the jpeg thing. does anyone know how to change this if possible? I am susing an eMac, mac OSX version 10.2.8, thanks!!!

This is probably not the simplest method, but it's one that I think works. As I recall, if you use Graphic Convertor you can launch it and then choose to Open as if you want to open that particular image file. From there, View Preview (if the preview pane isn't visible) and then Create Preview for the picture whenever you locate it on your hard drive. I think it will then appear as a miniature copy of itself when you look at it in the Finder.
Only works for pics though, not movies.

what if I don't have graphic convertor? isn't there a way of doing it through the system and have it always do it without asking until u wish otherwise?

Edit: Oh, shoot, I just noticed you are using 10.2.. damn.. I think they added this in 10.3. (Can anyone confirm?) I'd upgrade if I were you.
Turn on "Show Icon Preview" in the current folders Options window. (Command+J)
All JPG's, GIF's and PNG's will look like themselves. Some others too. Not sure which ones. But it works. And it doesn't beef up your filesize like GC does. (It's only a few KB per file, but those KB's add up. It's better to strip the preview from the file and use the Finder's method.)

Well, you can go to the View menu, choose View as Icons; then choose Show View Options.
Make sure 'All Windows' is selected (or Desktop if you download to the desktop), then check the box for 'Show Icon Previews'.

So, does 10.2 have the option? I forget, but I think it does. Because I know that 1.3 has a bug where the Finder crashes if you use Previews on the desktop. Also if an external app updates an image in an opened folder, the Finder crashes when you switch to it and it tries to update the icon. CRASH!
God, where the heck is Tiger? They'd better have fixed those gosh darned bugs! A year and a half without being able to have previews on the desktop and having to close a folder before I save an image in Photoshop is enough.
