I recently loaded X11 and Fink onto a 667 PowerBook. My goal is:

a. To play with Unix
b. To learn more about the OS
c. Get into a little code

Any suggestions for apps I should check out as a total noob?

Depends what you want to try. if you want to try some "standard" unix apps, get the Gimp for photo editing, freeciv for a game and the Uber geekiness of Xemacs, the text editor of kings.

they're aims, not goals. you'd aim to score a goal with that new knowledge, but you don't seem to have a goal in sight. try and get one first, otherwise you might just lose interest pretty quickly. i'd suggest Gimp, also, given your background.

for what it's worth, you don't really need X11 or fink to do a, b, or c. you just need a standard install of OS X. even Gimp comes as an .app, these days.

try MacDevCenter and go through some of the stuff they have there. that should get you started nicely.

For Gimp, just use Gimp.app.

To get an idea of what kinds of things Fink offers, check out this page.

Thanks Gorilla.

I'm looking to learn about Unix and to check out some of the unique applications written for the platform. Initially I'm looking at security apps mostly to ensure I understand how to protect my system(s) properly – wireless in particular. From there I'm open to most anything.

Thanks wataru, I have Fink on my machine already. Quite the beast, isn't she?

Thank you for your reply Phil. With all due respect, they're goals.

The link is much appreciated.
