Hi All,

I have an alias to a disk image that is a mystery to me: I can't find the original .dmg file!

If I double click on the alias, a disk mounts that reports as having 4.28Gb available (with 0 items). It's called "untitled" (no help there).

If I do a "command-r" on the alias, the disk image mounts (rather than shows the .dmg file).

I've of course done a search on ".dmg" (visible and invisible). No luck.

I'm concerned that this mystery disk image is actually taking 4.28Gb on my drive, and I'd like to get rid of it.

Can anyone help me out?

Chas

OmniDiskSweeper could help you locate such a file. But if it's a read-only or compressed disk image, than the reported space of 4+ gigs is only used if there is actually something inside the disk image taking up that space. The empty space is not reflected in the size of the actual .dmg.

What if you get info on the alias? It should give you the path to the original file.

Hi All,

thanks for the answers.

Xeo, I forgot to mention in my original post that I had done a search on all "large" files on my machine (with and without an additional search term of ".dmg"). Couldn't find anything that seemed to be related to the mystery disk image. OmniDiskSweeper couldn't find anything either. So, what you said about it being a read-only or compressed disk image is very helpful, thanks.

macmike42, that's one of the things that is so strange: when I get info on the alias, the disk image mounts!

Thanks again for the assistance,

Chas
