I’m trying to install MAC OS X on a brand new hard drive. It’s a completely empty hard drive.

When I put the CD in to the CD-Rom drive and boot from the CD by pressing C, I can’t seem to get any further than the “Happy Mac” screen.

I’ll turn the computer on, it’ll take about 30 seconds before I get the Happy Mac” screen and the CD sounds like it’s about to start, but the screen almost instantaneously goes blank and computer restarts over again.

BTW, the CD-Rom is a Sony CD Player, and not an original Apple one. Could that be the problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you still have the internal CD drive that shipped with your machine, or did you replace it with this Sony drive?

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

I don't have the original CD-Rom. The computer came without hard drive and CD Drive. It's an old G3 Beige machine.

Are you trying to install Mac OS X 10.2.8 or earlier?

10.3 and up don't work with beige G3s.

Are you able to boot from other CDs with the Sony drive?

For example, if you have an OS 9 CD, can you boot from that in the Sony drive?

I'm sorry I can't really help you, but I can tell you that I have the same issue with my Beige G3 with the original CD-ROM. Since installing OS X on it, I can't get it to boot off of a CD. Strangely enough it will boot from the CD to install the OS (when I have an OS on it already), but holding down C does not work.

If you google Beige G3 CD-ROM, you will find lots of topics on this, with some suggestions. None worked for me, but maybe you'll be lucky.

The only one I remember offhand is to make sure the CD-ROM is set as master and the only drive on the channel (have the CD-ROM on one channel and the hard drive on the other). Early Beige G3s don't support Master/Slave configurations.

Good luck, the Beige G3 has proven to be a remarkably resiliant machine. I actually have it upgraded to a G4 running 10.3.6 with the latest Security update (thanks to XPostFacto).
