I have just tried, unsuccessfully, to install iCal and received the following:

“The update iCal could not be verified and expanded correctly. Make sure you have permissions to write to /tmp/501/Temporaryitems/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate. Then try again.”

I have Repaired Permissions, Repaired Disk, and verified the volume with Disk Warrior (no problems). Strangely (to me), I had no problems on a volume that was the target (from the problem volume) for a Carbon Copy Clone.

Both volumes are on a PB G4/433, 10.3.6

Many thanks!

A few things to look at ..

Trash Software Update Prefs ..
Users/Home/library/preferences/com.apple.softwareupdate.plist

Clear Caches with this ...
Cache Out X
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/9538

Cache Out X clears out the cache entries on your machine, helping you recover valuable disk space on your machine. Items removed include the caches in System, Users, and Library, along with the Internet Explorer download cache. Optionally clears the IE's history cache as well.

Important: Close all other applications before cleaning caches ....then reboot.

Bergy, BINGO! A corrupt SW update preference was the culprit. I should have known that. Oh, the shame.

I continue to be amazed at all that I don’t know. Quite surprisingly, my wife does not share that opinion.

Thanks again. Really!
