Most third-party mice come with vendor-provided software for customizing the functions of their mouse. For example, I use a Logitech MX700 and Logitech provides Logitech Control Center (LCC) for this purpose. LCC adds a preference pane to System Preferences. You can usually download the latest version of the software for your mouse from the vendor's Web site.
Good Luck!
