On my QS2001 867 with ATI 8500, Open GL framerates for various apps have gone up dramatically. iTunes visualizer is now ~40 fps small and ~30 fps medium while windowed and ~75 to 80 small, ~70 medium and 55 fps large when full screen. Marine Aquarium is now ~125 fps. This is approxumately a 40-60% increase in fps when windowed and ~100% speed increase full screen.

My iTunes never changes on my Dual 2 Radeon 9800... always 109. I wonder why this update didn't help. My FPSs in iTunes have never changed since 10.3.0

I don't know. A reader at xlr8yourmac just posted that he had double fps with a game. He calculated a multiplier of 2.11 with a machine just like yours. Perhaps some sort of graphics prefs file needs to be trashed and then restarted, although I don't know what that file would be. Perhaps someone with more technical knowledge could comment.

I can say that World of Warcraft, the only 3D game I play, is definitely smoother, especially in high-traffic areas.

Quartz also seems faster, but maybe that's just my imagination.

Really, this is the first time I've been happy I installed an upgrade.

My iTunes Visualizer FPS remains virtually unchanged after doing the update. Before I got about 20 FPS; after, I got 20 and sometimes 21 FPS.

I was getting around 25 or so FPS in iTunes, now I get 30 pretty much all the time. In fullscreen mode, I can get close to 40 now. Pretty impressive!

Not the most scientific test, but it's how i usually test out my grahpics card after an update.

Sorry but my frames still top out at 50-52. No improvement.

The release notes for 10.3.7 specify lots of fixes aimed directly at WoW.

Lots of fixes? I see only two with no direct mention of WoW

- improved Open GL technology and updated ATI and NVIDIA graphics drivers

- improved compatibility for third party applications

edit :

sorry, you are right, these were on another page

- Addresses an issue with Blizzard World of Warcraft in which the game's frame rate could drop considerably when in "Ghost mode," if the computer uses an nVidia graphics card.

- Resolves an issue in which enabling Vertex Shaders in World of Warcraft could lead to unexpected graphics issues when using an nVidia graphics card.

- Addresses an issue with World of Warcraft in which incorrect colors or unexpectedly flashing objects could appear when using an ATI Radeon 9600 graphics card, making gameplay difficult.

I admit to being quite ignorant in video performance but it doesn't seem possible to have a higher FPS than the screen refresh rate. Correct?

It's possible, but your monitor won't be able to display the extra frames.

My LCD monitor is set @ 85 HZ, but my marine aquarium fps is ~140. There doesn't seem to be any such limitation. The fish do seem to swim smoother ( iTunes is much better) -- even if certain frames are selected for display and others are missed.

To add on to bmedina's note, not only is it possible, but the end result will be much smoother animation.

The graphics card will render the FPS in framebuffer, but the display will not be able to display the rendered frames. Therefore, the frames are discarded and wasted. It may improve perfomance to lock the number of allowable rendered frames to what screen refresh rate since a lot of cpu is wasted on those unneeded frames.
