Hi,
this is what happened:
I had my G5 running as always, since I got it two weeks ago. The only problem I encountered so far is that it didn't want to upgrade to f7 (Firmaware) from it's f5 because the Updater always crashes after typing in the password.
Now, I started VLC as I had done 10th of times before and doubleklicked a certain divx file which played on the g5 before and especially on my G4 (same OSX, same VLC, same everything cause I moved my Userfolder and stuff over to G5 just days ago) flawlessly.
Suddenly my sound was gone and my two volumebuttons (increase/decr.) didn't work anymore. iTunes didn't want to play. It "started playing" but didn't move it's progress point and I wouldn't hear a thing.
After rebooting: same.
After trying the firmware updater again - everything went fine. After doubleclicking the DivX: same problems appear.
I zapped the PRam: now my Two monitors aren't recognized correctly anymore (the small one, TFT is the "main monitor" and the big one is the second which I can't change on a fly, imagine my icon mess right now!)
I can change this through reboot and disconnecting the small monitor but next time it will change back again. :-/
I overinstalled OSX, updated all the updates.... the monitorproblem remains the same. My sound is back. Using the DiVX, after reinstalling VLC anew brings up the same problem again, when I play a different file afterwards all I get is totally trashed sound, noisy and distorted.
Anyone GOT HELP!?

Sounds like is may be a VLC problem. I had a similar expierence where VLC totally destroyed all audio on my computer. After a restart, it was fine. In VLC, under the Audio menu, I messed with the channels/track which is how I was able to recreate the problem, so I figured VLC was the problem. Try playing the movie in MPlayer and see if that works any better.

Ya, works with MPlayer. I find the bugreporting process for VLC totally annoying, I hope the guys take notice of this bug.
I am still distressed in my first experience in OSX that a simple app can trash my system (and even if it didn't really TRASH it, it make me feel like out of control over the system. What was the thing about applications being protected bla bla...)

Forum members will be glad to help you with problems, but complaining about the OS won't get you that far. OS X is rock solid for most. You yourself may be having problems, but please don't extrapolate from that to negative generalizations about the system.

Ya, I mean, as a matter of fact this is not a forum for facts only. I've been a Mac user for some reason since many years and I know why. It's because of that I was even more distressed by this incident. That's all.
I don't like to doubleclick divx files anymore which is not what I preached towards PC users.

You had a huge and very annoying problem with the system that could happen to any of us. Write it anyway you want, you don't have to freaking apologise to these guys for being upset with it! You're a long time Mac user that knows how things used to work as opposed to “now”. Stand up for that.

*lol* Thanx man, you are right.
Addressed to everyone: see, this is where computer related things start to become religious.
Okay, let's close this topic for now. If anyone knows constructive help he/she will be welcome.
I wish you all a Merry XMas and a Bug-free New Year.

They still work the same for most of us. This is an isolated incident that, yes, could happen to any of us — but so could a meteor strike, I suppose.
