I got my first kernel panic yesterday when trying to burn a DVD in toast. I have an external sony DVD burner in an external enclosure (forget the brand). It's worked pretty well in the past, but now all it does is make coasters. I've tried it using both firewire and USB, and the damn thing doesn't seem to want to work! Any ideas? Does OSX support external burners? I seem to hear conflicting stories. BTW... running 10.3.7...

Of course OS X supports them, just as you said it did in the past. So there are rumors to the contrary?

Try a new user account, and see if the burner is recognized in it, as well as in your System Profiler. Have you rebooted a second time since the 10.3.7 update ?

I thought they "supported them" I just wasn't sure if it was all burners or what not. I remember when I first got my powerbook and external enclosure I had some problems burning so I did a google search and read some stuff that said that OSX didn't support many brands or something to that effect. I remember downloading a plug-in or a little app which instantly made my powerbook regonize my external drive and then it worked fine. I'm not sure what's going on. I'm considering buying a DVD burner from LaCie (sp?). I'm just sick of not being able to burn DVDs... I should have just went with the superdrive!

Check the thread on 10.3.7, there's been a few problems with external burners reported after the update. Might have some tips from you (I don't have an external so I just glanced over those posts).

Thanks man, actually after reading it over I realized that I was one of the key bitchers. After playing with patchburn (something I tried before writing this post) again tonight I got it working. Only took me about an hour... after restarting quite a few times and getting 2 kernel panics... stupid DVD writers... why can't they just support them like everything else!
