Coming over from Windows and was wondering if there is something similar to the registry? I am a bit familar with the different libraries and folders using Linux Mandrake.

Also when I have a list in the Finder in the column view how can I sort by type.

Thanks.

The (much much better) equivalent of the Registry is your Preferences folder. Go to /Users/<yourname>/Library/Preferences and you'll see dozens of files, named by the company and product

e.g. com.apple.iTunes.plist

Open these files in an editor such as TextEdit, and you can see how they work. If you are Terminal-savvy you can also use the "defaults" command, e.g. defaults read com.apple.iTunes

As for sorting by type, nope, column view is by name only. You can sort by type in List view of course. You can also try the alternative file manager, Path Finder.

The Mac does not use a Windows-style registry. Mac OS X does maintain vaguely-registry-like caches, but they are generated dynamically and are not, as far as I know, available for viewing.

Column view only supports listing alphabetically. To sort by kind, use List view.

Thankfully, there is no Windows "registry" as such on MacOS X -- that's a gnarly single point of failure on Windows that really is getting more than a little bit long in the tooth.

Most of the files in the Preferences directories are plist files which as far as I can tell are simple xml files. The is a plist editor included in the developer tools.
