I've finally dumped pagemaker for InDesign CS - and am so glad to be out of Classic.

One hassle is that Com-H does NOT hide ID (have to go to menu). Ah, well, at least this can be fixed in Sys Prefs, right? Maybe not. In the Keyboard Shortcuts section of Keyboard & Mouse prefs, there's option to click "+" and add shortcuts to specific apps.

A nice menu can be dropped down listing ~all~ apps. But not InDesign among them. Forty or so apps on my sys are listed. Not InDesign.

Can app publishers choose to opt out of this system feature? (just as they annoyingly decided to opt out of the system standard of Com-H meaning "hide this app")

Are there shareware sys utilities to fill this gap? Simple fixes?

(a search of software forum here doesn't show much action on ID - much less consideration of this anomaly.)

If I understand correctly, you want to hide Indesign?

Well, unfortunately I haven't been very lucky with customising the keyboard shortcuts, but in exchange, you could option+click the desktop (or the finder icon) – that will hide the current app.

(if you press command+option and click in the desktop (or the finder icon), all apps will be hidden)

(I almost never use the command+H!)

You understand correctly. I guess I'm a major keyboard-command kinda guy.

Also, I really like to *understand* what's going on... like whether there is *supposed* to be a way to modify those commands for all apps or not?

I'm not sure, but the Keyboard stuff might still be a cocoa/carbon thing. Are there any carbon apps in the system preference list (were I at my mac, I'd check, but I'm not).

Also, have you found that command-H is mapped to something else in InDesign?

I don't know enough about which apps might be carbon to guess if carbon apps are omitted

As for com-H being mapped to something else, yes ("hide frame edges"). But I'm sure that's not why *the system* doesn't see ID as an app with potential for (at least some) keyboard shortcuts to be modified.

Basically anything that ran in some form under classic is likely to be carbon. (Examples would be any of the adobe apps, the Finder, M$ office, graphic converter, iTunes).

Cocoa apps include all the OmniGroup products, Nisus Writer Express, Keynote, Acquisition, etc.

Good point.

Doesn't ID have some internal method of changing key combos? (I believe, e.g., that in MS Office you can customize all the key combos from within the App's preferences).

System Preferences *does* allow changind shortcuts for FINDER, but *does not* list Graphic Converter (presumably Carbon) among those elligible for changes... So maybe it's not just a carbon/cocoa diff.

Thanks for suggesting looking for IDs own process! Finally found it (not under prefs but under Edit menu.
Unforunately, regarding ID... although it has a *well-organized* listing of shortcuts - pick the relevant menu - then look among the items... a bunch of commands are NOT listed, including:

Hide InDesign (not even mentioned - has by default NO shortcut in menu)
Hide Others (not even mentioned in the short-cut-changing, although in the menu it *does* have a shortcut (opt-H, as for most apps).

Sheesh! it is so handy to have app act standardly ... and even more so to allow such things to be changed GLOBALLY across apps by user

I'm not sure about the carbon/cocoa thing. iTunes is carbon and I've managed to set a custom shortcut for it (cmd-ctrl-z for zoom window = most useful) via System Preferences. I have found that system to be a bit dodgy in general though - the first time I tried to set that shortcut it forgot about it pretty soon after and there were no specific app shortcuts listed in the preference pane.

Anyway, I know nothing about ID, but in general having cmd-H mapped to anything else is something of a bummer ... they should know better .
