I had iPhoto 4.0.3. After upgrading to 10.3.6 the icon of iPhoto disappeared and a generic icon appeared. Double clicking on the icon gave attempts to launched itself but in vain.
deleting preferences, repairing permissions, running disk utility from external disk, all gave nothing, I had to go back to ver. 4 which works normally.
Recently I updated to 10.3.7 and tried to update once again, but with the same results.
What can be done
TIA

try get info (command + I) on iphoto and then click on the icon, in the top left of the get info window, and press delete.

that will cause it to revert it to a default icon. if that does not work, then option click here and unpack the .sitx file. it is the iphoto icon.

control click on iphoto (in your applications folder) > show package contents > contents > Resources.
now look for a file called NSApplicationIcon.icns. rename it to NSApplicationIcon.icns.old, or something, and then drag the new one that you downloaded from my site into the Resources folder.

run iphoto and the icon should work. if it is still not showing up in finder, do the get info icon delete thing.

Did you move iPhoto out of the Applications folder to another location prior to running the upgrade? Apple's updater is dumb in that it won't find the old version if you moved it, and will only install the update components where it thinks iPhoto should be.

MDC,

You spoke about the spoiled icon.
My question is: if after repairing the icon, after the update, it will cause the software to be launched in doubleclicking as usual?
My problem was not only the lost of the icon, but the inability to launch the software after updating.

Chris,
Yes, it is there and the update went completly, but then immediatly the icon has been lost, and the inability to launch the software.

Thanks for your help and best wishes to the holidays

I have gone your way MDC and encountered difficulties.
After upgrading to 4.0.3, and when the icon turn generic, I opened by control clicking as you explain, in order to put inside the resources your icon file. I can't open this folder and it gives me the note that I have not enough permission to enter there.
I could enter to Resources before upgrading without difficulties.
The upgrade is destroying something in the iPhoto.

get info on iphoto and click the triangle next to the ownership & permissions section, and the one in the ownership & permissions section.

change it to:
you can [read & write]

details
owner [system]
access [read & write]

group [admin]
access [read & write]

others [read only]

that is how mine is set. i think something might have happened with the permissions on the iphoto application. that would explain why you can't see the icon nor go into the resources folder nor run the application, you have no access to it, and thus it can't look at the icon/rest of the program.

get back to us, see if that helps.

Thank for your mail. Here is the situation in my unusable 4.0.3 version, after making get info.

Owner
system ( deemed and not active and a closed key symbol on its right side)
After clicking on the key symbol il opened, and all the commands became active, as you mentioned in your mail.

I went to the resources folder in the package, after control-click on the software as you suggested. Still can't open resources folder to change the icon.

BTW
The icon of iPhoto came back to the 4.0.3 version, but it still unlaunchable.
It starts, ( I see its icon, still generic, with a big A on it.) and after a while disappeared, and the software doesn't launched.

TIA
