Hey guys. A buddy of mine owns an iBook running 10.2.6 and he has forgotten his password to the admin account. I located a Jaguar install disc to reset the password (or better yet, perform a clean install for him) but I cant get the machine to boot in OS x. I hold down the "C" key while restarting but nothing happens, the machine just starts up to the login screen. Anybody have any ideas? The login screen is set on the mode that requires you to type in your username and password, so the only way I can get in is when I type in "guest" as my UN. Thanks guys.

Put the Installation CD in and then hold down option when booting. This should give you an icon for each bootable volume found. select the CD and click the right arrow. The C key should work as well, but there could be a OF password set up. If there is an openfirmware PW set up holding down option will ask you for it. If you don't know that then you will need to pull some RAM or some other way reset the motherboard.

With the RAM out, reset the P-RAM 3 times, which resets the open firmware password.
If the machine has been locked down this much I get the impression that you probably shouldn't be messing with it. Is this an iBook that your friend got from school?

I have tried removing the ram and reseting the pram three times but on startup nothing happens and even after trying three times no luck.
Dont worry, the ibook was not stolen but rather owned by my friends sister a while back. After this much security even I am wondering whats on it!

modifying the amount of RAM and zapping the PRAM should reset the OF password. If it is not then I would look on the motherboard for a reset button. I don't know if this exists on the iBook motherboards, but most other Macs have them I think it is called the PMU Reset button or something like that.
