No central server, this is at college. Most of the users have their comps set to share stuff with no password required, but I always get a pop up that asks for workgroup and log in and stuff, also I have no idea how to share things like some TV shows I downloaded before the big BT scare (this is Canada, totally legal, and most of us I have cable at home but there's no chance of us getting TV out at school).

Anyway it's just a bunch of comps connected via a big hub network. And a DHCP server... somewhere. What's the best way to share files with the PC users?

Well, since we are talking about Windows users, you have (only) three choices:
  • straight web
  • WebDAV
  • SMB/CIFS (Samba/Windows Sharing)
In the first option you just turn on the web sharing option and toss the files into either your web folder (per user), or into the main web directory.

The second option requires a bit more savy/work and there is lots of documentation out there for those who want to find it. There are some concerns about Windows not playing well with non-Microsoft WebDAV implementations (surprise, surprise).

The third option is you just turn on Windows Sharing. You can then enable the SWAT interface and setup a share with guest browse. A small tip: you need to use xinetd rather than inetd. Oh... and if you make changes in the sharing panel it will over-write your samba config file...

Well I'm not sure about those things either. But if you turn on Windows Sharing in the Sharing Preferance Pane that will share your Home folder to everyone. However, they need to have your password to access it. But what I do is only share one folder (like videos or music) using a program called Sharepoints. With that you can share any folder you like and also set up a guest user to access it. This is obviously more secure than sharing your entire Home folder so I recommend it.

Hope that's what you were looking for, ask back if you need help configuring Sharepoints (but I'm away from my Mac now so it will be from memory).
