Hi all,

Not a question specially for this pool but...

I have an external LaCie 250 FW HDD and plan to buy the same onr to build a RAID 1 for safety reasons of course.
Would I be able to build a RAID 1 without backing up my stuff on another disc and then retransfer the whole buch on my RAID1?

Not with Apple's software. This involves formatting both drives, so you would need somewhere to put the data.

Also, it is advisable that you have a firewire controller per drive.

Well your topic says you want RAID 0 (striping) but your post says RAID 1 (mirroring). I'll assume you meant RAID 1 and that means you should ignore Detrius' post. It can be done (I know from experience - did it to the bootdisk of 4 xserves). Just use:
diskutil enableraid mirror disk0

(assuming it's disk0 which I don't think it is since it's a FW drive). Then repair the raid with:
diskutil repairmirror {RAID NAME} {BAD SLICE} {ORIGINAL HD} {NEW HD}

You can find your disk names, etc w/ `diskutil list` and `diskutil checkraid`

NOTE: Just because it can be done doesn't mean it's a good idea to do it without backing up your drive

Yep, I read that speedwise, it does quite a difference.
I do plan to have a dual G5 soon-ish but will build it first on my ibook G4.
Will I "burn" my FW controller? or will I encounter any specific problem?

Yes, it is a RAID1 I want to build.
The idea is that now, my main computer ia an iBook G4 with 1.25 GB of RAM on wich I author DVDs and make motion menus.
On the side, I have a LaCie FW 250GB HDD to put my stuff, and I am lucky that the disk (always full) did not die yet! I would never survive it!
So my idea is to RAID1 my disc with another to have an "automatic back up unit".
Am I clear there?
Well I understood that I' better transfer my data to another disc before building the RAID1, and I am sure that the RAID will be easyer to build this way and maybe safer as build from scratch.
I will of course keep my internal HD as a start up.
