Hey, I'm having a rather interesting problem. I am out of town for the holidays, and I needed to access my computer from the road, so I loaded up VNC and was trying to look at a file on my computer. anyhow, the refresh rate was awful, so my friend suggested I turn down the colors (which is actually a good idea), but he turned it down to 256, not 'thousands'. this rendered my entire screen unreadable.

is there a unix command i can issue to os x or perhaps something i can write to a plist file and reboot to get my resolution back?

What your friend meant was to turn down the color pallet on the VNC connection (not the computer on the other end). That saves a lot on the bandwidth of the connection. I don't know of a shell command that gives access to that preference.
