"There is no default application specified to open the document ".DS_Store".
Why am I getting this? I'm not trying to open that file, All I'm doing is selecting a few files, and doing command-down to open them.
I have no idea what to make of this.

Unless you have made invisible files visible, or are working off a Windows volume that shouldn't happen.

Sometimes it happens when I have a windows share open, and sometimes it happens when I don't. I do have a windows share "alias" in my sidebar, though. I'll take that out, and see if it stops.
Is there a way to make this not happen when working on a windows share?

On a related note, is there any way to stop OS X from sticking a .DS_Store file in every shared folder I access on a windows box? It annoys my friends that my computer is always creating these files on thier hard drives.

Apple should have a preference setting for this, because .DS_Store files are worthless to others.

Has this been sent to Apple Feedback by numerous people yet?

please do. I did.
There is an issue working with Samba shares involving the constant writing of .DS_Store files. It is a bad practice to leave behind visible files in every Samba shared directory one browses, cluttering directories. It doesn't hurt Mac users, but it makes us ungracious guests, so to speak. It would be great if there were some kind of setting for disabling .DS_Store and other "hidden" files while browsing network shares.
This might also solve a related problem with the Finder reporting:
"There is no default application specified to open the document ".DS_Store".
While opening files from a Samba share.
Thank you.
