How do i know what ports are open and what ports are closed.... I have firewall off, but in some games like WarCraft 3, i stil get messages that i need to turn off firewall, and i cant host games... my basic question is, in osx, how do i know what ports need to be open for certain applications, and where do i find the place to open and close them.

thanks

Mat.

I'm guessing you're behind a router, yes? Warcraft is probably talking about physical firewall rather than one in software (Mac OS X).

That's what I'm guessing as well. Either that or on a university network that has been locked down. Many of them will only permit Port 80 traffic.

Just a switch? You're not sharing a cable modem or DSL connection? Are you trying to play against people over the internet or in your own house? It sounds like you've got a router if you've got a switch.

ok, to be honest, i dont even know what a router is.... i got a dsl connection, meaning i have the little dsl box that is conected to a telephone line, and it has a lan wire coming out of it, which goes into the switch, and the switch has 3 more lan wires going into 3 different computer, so we all have internet. I cant host when im playing online, no problems for lan games.

This "switch" you say, what exactly does it say on the casing? It is most probably a router, which acts as a firewall and masquerades all of the computers on your network as one behind the network. You would need to forward the proper ports on your router to your computer.

Or the DSL is the router and the switch is just that, a switch. Many DSL modems are routers themselves.

Depending on the make and model of the DSL modem, you should be able to access it with a web browser and set up port forwarding so WarCraft 3 will work the way you want it to.

Since you're configuring the router, and NOT the computer, you do it the exact same way as on Windows:

RTFM on the router, then open your web browser and enter the router's address to access its configuration interface.

usually, this will be http://192.168.0.1 , but this may vary.

It means: Read The (ahem) Freaking Manual

Type the address into the browser address bar, either way should be fine. The browser shouldn't really matter, router config menus are usually very simple HTML, so they they'll work in just about anything.
