Hi

My machine went rather loopy recently. One of the problems was that, at least half the time, it wouldn't sleep, restart or shutdown. The connection with the monitor, keyboard and mouse was cut but the machine itself kept running, leaving me to reach for the front button...

Last night, I did a clean reinstallation of Panther plus all my software. I thought this would solve the problem, but my machine wouldn't sleep this morning.

Any ideas what could cause this and how I can deal with it?

Thanks

800Mhz G4, 10.3.4 (problem also exisited in 3.1)

It appears that you need to reset your PMU:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=95037

The PMU (Power Management Unit) is a microcontroller chip that controls all power functions for the computer. The PMU is a computer within a computer. It has memory, software, firmware, I/O, two crystals, and a CPU. Its functions is to:

Tell the computer to turn on, turn off, sleep, wake, idle, etc.
Manage system resets from various commands.
Maintain parameter RAM (PRAM).
Manage the real-time clock.

Many system problems can be resolved by resetting the PMU chip. Whenever you have a computer that fails to turn on, follow this procedure before replacing any modules.
