I use file sharing all of the time to share documents over airport between my TiBook and my PM G5. Today, file sharing on my Powerbook simply will not start.

Clicking "start" in the system preferences goes to the typical "File sharing starting up..." message but it never turns on. This is true even when airport is off and no network is present.

Any suggestions?

This is new behavior. I am running 10.3.7, but I'm quite sure it was working fine under .7. I have repaired permissions and restarted to no avail.

Have a look in the console logs -- see if there are any helpful messages at the end.

When the File Sharing Start button is pressed the system log registers:

executing /usr/sbin/AppleFileServer

I let it try for quite a while then quit System Preferences. No further entries were made to console or system.log

Sorry, I have no answer but I do have the same problem.

I click on the box for Personal File Sharing and the tick appears for a second then disappears again. I cannot print to an IP Printer either. I have been running 10.3.7 for weeks and this has only just started today......

Error in console is :

2005-01-11 12:26:46.374 System Preferences[1655] ### Error:-1 File:FileSharing.m Line:227
2005-01-11 12:31:18.860 System Preferences[2033] ### Error:-1 File:FileSharing.m Line:227
2005-01-11 12:31:27.358 System Preferences[2033] ### Error:-1 File:FileSharing.m Line:227

Everything else works fine.
Anyone got any helpful tips?

This happened to me maybe a year ago. I fixed it with some good help from others on this message board and I'm almost certain it involved extracting a file from the OS X install disks with a tool like Pacifist. I'll do my best to remember the specifics and post again with the details.

i got it running again, but it the service will not show up when i browse for it.
i logged in as root and modified this file:
file://Macintosh HD/etc/hostconfig

AFPSERVER=-YES-
i changed the above to:
AFPSERVER=-NO-

saved it.
shut down.
powered up.
logged on as my admin user.
started the service in System Prefs->Sharing
it starts up fine, but when i browse for it on the network it does not show up.
i can directly connect to it via afp://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/ though.

BBEdit allows you to open hidden documents and sudo them. Saves the potential risks(?) of enabling root login.

Anyway, changing the AFPSERVER line to NO didn't work for me and when I logged out and back in, it was changed back to YES.

Clicking the start file sharing button still gives the "file sharing starting up..." prompt that last indefinitely.

Well I fixed mine (hurrah!) by using Disk Utility to verify and repair disk permissions.
So it may just turn out to be a problem with permissions.

Was easy in the end but took a while to get there :-)

Hope this helps you out as well.

Well...miraculously it started working again.

I restarted several times becuase I put the PB into Firewire mode so maybe that combined with permission repairs etc. did the trick.

However, while Filesharing was out of comission, I found that SSH was easier, more secure and arguably the better way to go.

If you are looking for a *really* good and completely *free* SSH client, check out FUGU.
