I was trying to delete just one thing from the trash. Could not do it. But I was able to empty the whole trash.
Are you not able to empty just certain things from trash? all or nothing? thanks!

That's correct. It's exactly like real trash. You can put things in. You can pull things out. But once you empty it, everything is gone.

the trash is not a "halfway house". you're not supposed to store things in there that you don't want deleted. thus being able to delete individual items from within the trash makes no sense.

It world like this for a reason. In fact, every other GUI works this same way, for that same reason. If you're not absolutely sure that you should be emptying the Trash, then there is no point in deleting just one item. The Trash is not a permanent storage bin.

Interesting. I fill up the trash, and then empty if once a month. And during that month sometimes I may retrieve something from it - but it is rare. And it's even rarer but sometimes i want a certain document off the computer, but without deleting the whole trash before the month is up -- hence the original question here. Just so you understand.
but I'll take the defeat here gracefully.

Don't put stuff in the trash unless you are serious about trashing it. Why do you think the default setting asks you if you really want to empty the trash?

Good one!
But hey, you can always pull certain files you wanna keep out of the bin, before emptying it: just like a real bin...

This one is sheer brilliance (and I hope it's true, because it means somebody at Microsoft was thinking on their feet:
No Smoking Please
One day we had a gentleman call in with a smoking power supply. The service representative was having a bit of trouble convincing this guy that he had a hardware problem.
Service Rep: Sir, something has burned within your power supply.
Customer: I bet that there is some command that I can put into the AUTOEXEC.BAT file that will take care of this.
Service Rep: There is nothing that software can do to help you with this problem.
Customer: I know that there is something I can put in... some command... maybe it should go into the CONFIG.SYS or the WIN.INI
[After a few minutes of going round and round]
Service Rep: Okay, I am not supposed to tell anyone this but there is a hidden command in some versions of DOS that you can use. I want you to edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT and add the last line as C DOS\NOSMOKE and reboot your computer.
[Customer does this]
Customer: It is still smoking.
Service Rep: I guess you'll need to call Microsoft and ask them for a patch for the NOSMOKE.EXE.
[The customer then hung up. We thought that we had heard the last of this guy. But NO; he calls back four hours later!]
Service Rep: Hello, Sir, how is your computer?
Customer: I called Microsoft and they said that my power supply is incompatible with their NOSMOKE.EXE and that I need to get a new one. I was wondering when I can have that done and how much it will cost....
