step 1: run /Applications/OSXvnc.app/storepasswd with the appropiate flags. store your password file somewhere, say in ~/vncpass

step 2: run "/Applications/OSXvnc.app/Contents/MacOS/OSXvnc-server -rfbport 5901 -rfbauth ~/vncpass &" substituting file name and port number as appropriate. you should be able to figure out how to run this on startup. maybe use an applescript and put that in login items. i just have the above as an alias, so i ssh into my box, run "vnc" (aliased to the above) and then can vnc the night away

You're going to kick yourself. If you've got the latest version of OSXvnc, it's so simple:

1. Run OSXvnc.
2. Click the "Startup" tab.
3. Click "Configure Startup Item".

It will use your current settings for the server at startup time. Once configured, you can change your settings to somthing else without upsetting the way the startup server runs.

oh yes...

4. Read the manual

hmm, that's good to know. my setup predates this option, needless to say. besides, i like being able to ssh in and then launch -- i don't like to leave daemons with ports open to the outside world running unnecessarily.
