a few questions about .DS_store files:

- is there any way to manipulate (ie not just delete) the contents of .DS_store files?
(they seem to be in a binary format; as a side question i wonder why Apple chose to implement them like this, instead of using the XML/plist format they use for most other preference storage)

- also, i'm curious if anyone knows the location of the .DS_store file for the 'My Computer' window?

- finally, where (if at all?) is the information stored on whether a finder window is in toolbar mode, or not? (my problem is my 'my computer' window always shows up in the ugly brushed-metal/toolbar more, and the finder doesn't remember my preference NOT to have it that way between reboots).

tx for any suggestions,
ox

Not unless you want to crack the format.

Maybe just laziness. If you want to give them the benefit of the doubt, you could say it's for speed.

I'm not positive, but I don't think it has one. My impression is that it uses the normal settings for a new window.

I assume you've tried the new window/change settings/close window voodoo?

Indeed. All such voodo has been attempted; it seems to work for all window settings EXCEPT for toolbar.status.mode (!!!).
