I just bought an IMac G5 and an Epson Stylus Photo R300 replacing an Imac G3 and an old Stylewriter II printer that I connected through a QDock to the USB port.

The Imac is running OSX 10.3.7 and emulating OS 9.2.2.

The Epson will print using OSX applications, but not using OS9 applications.

I downloaded the printer driver for OS9 for this printer from the Epson site and installed it. But when I go to the chooser, and click on the R300 icon on the left side, nothing shows up on the right side. Then when I go to print (using Word from Office 2001), I get an Epson dialog box. When I click on Print in that box, I get an error message saying that the R300 is not correctly selected in the chooser.

The Epson people keep saying that it is not possible to print out of OS9 because the Classic emulation is not recognizing their printer driver. The Mac people say that printing from OS9 is possible, but that there must be something wrong with Epson's printer driver -- the ultimate run around.

Does anybody else have this problem? How do you solve it? Are there any comparable printers from other companies that WILL print out of the classic environment?

Doug

i had the same problem, and i had some computer whiz guy come over. i think it involved some kind of wireless router; it was expensive i remember! i don't remember exactly what he did, or if in fact it was a router, but the prob can be fixed. you just need someone more savvy than me to tell you how

I have a little experimental hack that might be able to get any printer that works with OS X working in Classic. Just send an e-mail to the address I posted above; I'd like an opportunity to see if this actually works.

I was about to say -- isntall the os9 driver, but you said you did that. I had this same problem several weeks ago and that was my solution. BUT -- did you install the driver while in 9? That could be the problem.

Ooops -- Just realized you have a NEW Mac! Mine is 4-plus years old and still boots into 9.

Update on my problem -- in case others have the same issues.

I bitched hard enough to Apple that they let me return the printer. The argument that worked was that the printer that THEY sold with THEIR computer did not work with ALL parts of THEIR computer.

I did some searching on the HP web site to see if HP printers would have the same problem. Didn't find anything addressing my specific issue (printing from the Classic environment on a Mac that won't run full-blown OS-9).

My daughter has an HP Deskjet 932C that she uses with her laptop. So I downloaded the OS-9 and OS-X drivers for that printer and installed both of them. IT WORKED!!! I can now print from both OS-X and the Classic environment. The printer is only a 4-color printer (the Epson was a 6-color printer), so I may upgrade to a newer HP in the future -- IF I can be certain that it will print from OS-9.

I don't know if all HP printer drivers will work in the Classic environment, but the Deskjet 932C does.

Doug

P.S. to CharlesS. Sorry about not getting back to you about your hack, but I got sick, then had only a brief window to return the printer for credit.
