I just updated to 10.3.7 and itunes 4.7.1 and now system sound distorts all sounds. At first I thought it was just itunes but when I launch ichat the start up sound distorted too. So, any ideas? I repaired permissions after the update and retsarted. I wouldn't even know where to begin with what pref.
Thanks

This is a known problem with MDD & FW800 G4 towers and Mac OSX 10.3.6 & 10.3.7.
The temporary solution is to:
1. unplug and replug the speakers from the headphone/sound out mini jack
or
2. put your system to sleep and wake it up.
Both ways will return your volume to normal.
1. OR you can wait for Mac OSX 10.3.8 update to come out and hope that Apple will address this problem by then.
2. The other alternative is to downgrade to Mac OSX 10.3.5.

I just replugged the jack before I checked your post and that was in fact the problem. Thank you.
I came from 10.3.5 and had no problems. I don't know why we fix what ain't broke
So can I expect this problem all the time with this version? Should I just go back to 10.3.5?

This audio problem will come back everytime you restart or turn on your computer. I too am affected. You could either downgrade back to OS X 10.3.5 (that was the version before the audio bug was introduced in OSX 10.3.6 to 10.3.7) or wait for OSX 10.3.8 which will probably address the audio problem.
Apple is aware of this audio bug. Many MDD & FW800 tower owners (including myself) have sent a bug report to Apple when the problem was first discovered in OSX 10.3.6. It usually takes 2 revisions of Panther for Apple to work in fixes, like the Radeon 9800 DVD player bug which appeared in 10.3.2 or 10.3.3 and was finally fixed in 10.3.5.
I just use the temporary solution to get me by until the OSX 10.3.8 update shows up, which is scheduled to come out sometime during Feburary.

an easier solution is to just rip the audio.kext file from the 10.3.5 installer, using pacifist, and replacing the current one with it... worked like a charm for me!
