Several months ago, I read some postings about various battery meter-related problems in updating to Mac OS X 10.2.8.
Is it now safe to upgrade? I am currently using 10.2.6, but it gets into a kernel panic every time my screen effects kick in while playing " Vendetta Online." I'm tired of this problem.
Any suggestions (besides upgrading to Panther)?

Yes, it's safe (for the majority)...however, nobody is going to guarantee you it's going to be a perfectly safe update for you particular machine and/or fix your issue at hand.

I'd say it's alright. There are still updates made to 10.2 if there are any security flaws.
You might just want to wait and upgrade to 10.4 when it comes out. I have 10.3 but I never used it because it hosed my iBook one time.

I think I ditched 10.2.8 all to gether and went straight up to 10.3. I've been mucho more luckily with stability in 10.3. Perhaps Apple does things like this on purpose, ship some sloppy updates in front of a major update? I guess/hope not. But in general Jaguar wasn't the most stable of the cats in my opinion. I'll recommend repairing file permissions, run the cron jobs, reset PRAM, (if possible) take a backup of your data, run the update, repair the file permissions once more, and you'll most probably be safe (at least you've done what you could). Good luck.

Oh really? Would that be because I'm willing to apply updates as they become available, rather than wait months (or years) because I'm afraid they might hose my system.
Goodness, I think I installed 10.2.8 well over a year ago.
Later, dude

BFD - If you chose to install updates quickly that's your business, big man. Why would you be so arrogant and presumptuous to assume that everyone else needs to live their life by your standards?
Please go back under your rock and keep your snide comments to yourself.

The title of this thread reminds me of the movie "Marathon Man".
"Is it safe yet?"
I'm strange, I know.

There's nothing wrong with waiting to update one's system (or not updating at all) - if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
However, I agree with others... 10.2.8 is safe (though I personally think 10.3.7 is a better OS).

Here's the thing:
10.2.8 isn't going to get any "safer" than it was. 10.2.8 is 10.2.8 is 10.2.8.
The only issue is whether *you* feel comfortable installing it.
