System Preferences > International > Input Menu (Tab) > Un-check "Show input menu in menu bar"

Just holding down the Apple key and dragging it off the menu bar will work, too.

If you don't want the US flag there but need the character menu, you can change to the Australian keyboard. It works the same as far as I can tell.

I wish there way a way to have the character/keyboard palette up there without the flag icon...

Isn't the flag icon just some .bmp file somewhere deep down in the /System directory? If somebody could tell us where it is, we could just change the icon to show a piece of cheese or something...

have a read of this. havenae tried it myself, but the theory sounds good. only major problem seems to be in trying to find an OSX app which can edit the keyboard icon file...

I think it's a .icns or a .tiff rather than a .bmp, but you've got the right idea. I don't know exactly where it is, though.

The keyboard-layout icon is represented as a flag because it's a compact way of showing which keyboard layout is in use. Many countries have different customary keyboard layouts, even those which use similar character sets. France, for example, uses a very different layout from the QWERTY found in most English-speaking countries, and even among English-speaking countries there are often subtle differences in the layouts.
