Hi

this is a nightmare - I was 'ejecting' a network connection to another mac (I was connected to the share called 'Paul' which is the same name as my user folder on the mac I was working on) and before I knew what was happening error messages came popping up and my entire desktop which had been littered with document icons etc (it was due a bit of a clean up) has DISAPPEARED.

Now when I click on the Desktop icon I get the message 'The alias desktop could not be opened because the original item could not be found'!!??

When I select the user 'Paul' instead of seeing the usual list of folders I get the message 'the folder 'Paul' could not be opened because you do not have sufficient access priveleges'!!??

All my settings/preferences/keychains/bookmarks - everything - has gone, obviously because the system cannot find any of my user preferences/libraries etc.

Can anyone help please with diagnosing what might have happened and how I might fix this. I have been looking incase I had accidentally moved the entire contents somewhere they shouldn't be but no luck so far.

The mac i'm using is on 10.3.6 - the one I was connected to uses 10.3.2

Many thanks in advance...

Update!

I have managed to sort this out - I still don't know what happened but my user folder suddenly had 'no access' privileges assigned to it.

When I clicked on the main 'house' user icon in the finder window the error message would come up, but when I navigated through the user folder with the 'Mac HD' it would at least let me select the user folder. I did a 'get info', which revealed the 'no access' setting. When I changed this to 'Read and Write' the problem seemed to be solved, although the desktop was still missing.

On a restart however everything was back on the desktop!

A big relief as I'm sure you can understand.
