I would like to write a shell script that traverses the hierarchy of an HFS volume that is shared with Windows clients via Samba for Windows shortcuts. It would then look at the content of the shortcut and create a Mac OS X alias at the same location. Conversely, it would find aliases and augment them with shortcuts.

I don't know the specs that either aliases or shortcuts follow. If I had them, I could give this project a stab. Do any of you have that information?
