When my iMac is left standing untouched (but running) 8 out of 10 times I will return to a crash (multi-language) screen telling me to hold down the start button. Is there anything I can do to correct this?

Do you have any external devices connected? Did you install any third-party RAM?

Post the contents of /Library/Logs/panic.log and we can try to help you decipher it.

What's a "Kernal"? I'm not familiar with that term.

Actually I have both. Added m3mory and an external USB drive as backup. Do you have a solution?

Try removing your third party RAM and seeing if the problem goes away.

Ditch the USB drive, at least temporarily. If you want an external hard drive Firewire is a much better idea, anyway. Also, open the Console application in Utilities, click on the Logs button in the toolbar, find the /Library/Logs directory, click the triangle beside it and there should be Panic.log files listed. Post the contents of one of those files here and we may be able to narrow the cause.
