I'm installing Panther on a rev. D 333MHz iMac with wiped 6 gig HD, 256MB, current firmware, no partitions.. I've gone through this process now 5+ times, each time the same thing:

when it gets to the 'optimizing' portion, or the end of the progress bar for disk 1, it says it's gonna reboot in XX seconds, and gives me the option to manually restart. Doesn't say 'insert disk 2' or anysuch thing. upon rebooting I'm back at the 'Choose your language' screen, the first part of the install. again.

btw, when I start up from the Panther CD 1, and go to 'Choose Startup Disk', It lets me select "Mac OS 10.3 on Macintosh HD", but restarting then gets the flashing ?/folder icon.

The installation works fine, but your iMac obviously doesn't find the hard drive while booting, that's why it always starts the installer from the CD again as long as the CD is inserted.

The reason is probably that you formatted your hard drive with the wrong tool. Sometimes this even happens when you format the disk with the Disk Utility included in Mac OS X.

I would boot the iMac off a Mac OS 9 CD, start the "Drive Setup" application, repartition the disk (important) and update the driver (this option is somewhere in the menus of Drive Setup). Then restart from the Panther CD and reinstall Panther - that way it will certainly work.

hmm, sounds pretty good to me. Although, for each respective OS, I used the corresponding disk utility (drive setup for OS 9/OS X) and updated the disk drivers... although I did not partition the drive. perhaps I should. I'll do that now and report back. This little drive is 5+ years old, maybe it's on it's way out.

Try letting it reboot without the CD in. If that doesn't work try zapping the PRAM.
