I just installed the new 2005-001 security update (SecUpd2005-001Pan.dmg) via Software Update on my G4 (OS 10.3.7) which is a stand alone Mac and not connected to a network. And now almost nothing is working anymore:
Programs won't start up anymore. And it's even impossible to install new software anymore as the installer won't simply work.

I was recommend to repair permission.

In the meantime I booted the Mac from its original CD (using Command C whilst starting up), run First Aid to verify and repair the hard drive and afterwards to verify/repair permission as recommended elsewhere. Some minor repairs were made, everything ok now, but still nothing is working.

I also tried to run repair permission from the CD/First Aid after I had booted the Mac from the HD as the owner/ administrator (no password has been set). However, in this case, the repair permission won't run because if I am trying to launch the First Aid the programme simply doesn't respond.

Exactly the same is happening if I am trying to launch other programmes such as Mail: nothing is happening! When having the "Force Quit Applications" window open while trying to launch a programme after a while a message is appearing next to programme, simply saying, eg.: Mail (not responding).

Any help/suggestions would be highly appreciated. For example, is there any possibility to deinstall/remove the new security update?

Cheers

well it's not that the security update itself is causing the problem - LOTS of us have installed it and our machines work fine.

since you've done the disk repair and permissions repair, the next thing to do would be to clear out caches. There are various tools available to do this for you...

Hi Ronaldo ...

A few things to try ...
Go to Macintosh HD/Users/Your_Name/Library/Preferences and trash the files:
- com.apple.ATS.plist
- com.apple.BezelServices.plist
Restart. If this did not help, go to Users/Your_Name/Library and drag the folder Preferences to the desktop. Restart and see if this solved the problem

If you don't want to have all new prefs .. definitely move to the trash ...
Macintosh HD/users/your account/library/preferences/com.apple.installer.plist
Empty trash ..

Then download and run this ...
Onyx

Go to the "Automation" pane ... choose "Clear all" and "Complete Optimization" and check all other boxes .. then execute ..

If you want to go back to a previous update ...

Bergy, I must honestly admit: You are a great man as your suggestions have brought a solution:

- com.apple.ATS.plist or - com.apple.BezelServices.plist are the culprits! Now the programmes are up and running again.

I was really desperate as nothing was working anymore, and now you've not only saved the day but also made me quite happy for your wonderful help.

Many many thanks
