Nope, Dashboard is a new feature in Tiger.

In some cases, Panther does have some other utilities that may have a similar function (such as Sherlock for the dictionary), but which won't be available at just the touch of a key like the Dashboard widgets are.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

For widget-like stuff today, look at something like Konfabulator.

Well, you can run Tiger's widgets in Panther today. You just need to use Safari. I mean, these things all use web standards. I have been doing it since the first widgets for tiger have popped up.

I go to these places:

http://www.thedashboarder.com

and

http://www.dashboarddev.com

---------------

But regarding the dictionary widget...

This isn't a widget connecting to the Internet to lookup words. It is a front end to the new Dictionary app Apple has created and are bundling with Tiger.

I just logged onto that first Widget link and it said, "Consisting of user-created widgets for Apple's forthcoming "Tiger." I'm new to Macs. Does that mean those Widgets are ONLY for Tiger OS or will they work on any OS after Tiger also?

Thanks

Hi there. Yes, the ones at thedashboarder.com are made by non-Apple devs. The widgets are technically only for Tiger - as in, they will only function as they are fully intended using Tiger and the Dashboard. However, since they are basically just web pages, you can open them in Safari (open the folder with .wdgt extension and click on the .html file in it) and the majority will work for the most part, but Safari is not their intended platform (the Dashboard is), so expect things to be a bit weird.

All the games I've made should work fine in Safari, but some (such as Capture) use Dashboard specific technologies, and so won't.

Hope that helps.

Chris.

Thanks, Chris.

That makes updating with Mac's kind of problematic, doesn't it. If you spend the time to get your OS configured just the way you like it and then Apple comes out with an update that makes some of what you have inoperable......what's the point of customizing your OS? Does that program Konfabulator have the same problem? Maybe that's the way to go? Or maybe just stick with Apples new upcoming widget feature?

Any thoughts?

They are for Tiger and above. Anything after Tiger will still be compatible!!

Don't worry about it.

I think it's better than Windows where you have the same tired ol' XP for what...6 years now? They released it in 2001 and it's 2005 and no changes!! The Mac universe is exciting

Nobody said anything is going to become inoperable later on. Chris said things that aren't fully operational now will work properly once Tiger comes out. You're getting more functionality, not losing something you had.

Well, Apple did say that after Tiger, they're going to slow down the OS release schedule. I suspect they just wanted to hurry Tiger out there so that they had at least one OS that can take advantage of the G5. How long have they had G5s? Since 2003?
