my new powerbook will be here on monday and this is my first mac ... is it benificial to do a clean os x install on a new mac? i know with pc doing a clean windows install will speed up the new computer because the manufacture add alot of junk to windows with there pc

Not if you just got it... unless you've got some exotic configuration in mind. Your system will come with a "clean install".

FWIW, I did just that when I got my PB17" about a year ago. Just wiped the drive and then did a clean install--de-selecting things mostly. For example, I didn't need or want the various language/localization packages. I believe you can easily remove these afterwards but...

Anyway, I just like knowing (as much as I can) what I have installed.

Keep in mind that the manufacturer of Macs also made the installer for the operating system. So by default, you'll end up with an OS very much the same after a clean install as when the machine was purchased new.

Having said that, you can customise the installation to avoid some bits you don't want, such as additional printer drivers, or localisations. However, these won't really slow your machine down at all - they just take up a bit of disk space.
