do i need to format the HD first to reinstall OS X panter or do i just insert the install cd and install without formatting the HD first

no need to reformat the hard drive unless the hard drive is formatted in something bizarre.

Tur, however, formatting IS useful if he is having HD related problems...bad boot sectors, invalid directory sttructures, ect ect
