I'm curious about the daily, weekly, and monthly Unix maintenance that OS X performs in the middle of the night. I never leave my PowerBook on all night. It's usually asleep, like me, at 3 AM when these maintenance tasks run. I know Macaroni will run these tasks for me automatically, but I'm wondering if there are specific commands I can enter through Terminal to run these manually.

You could just open up macaroni and run them with the press of a button from the control panel...

1. Launch Terminal.
2. Type sudo periodic daily weekly monthly and press Return.
3. Enter your administrator's password when asked, and press Return again.
4. Wait until the command line prompt reappears (it may take several minutes) and you are done.

People are far too obsessed with "maintenance commands" which they don't understand and are, in effect, just placebos.

Fix those permissions and rotate your logs!
