I find it really frustrating when I want to use my audio interface (Digi 002) for iTunes, etc, but it doesn't happen to be switched on when the app has launched. This means I need to relaunch iTunes so that it recognises the hardware, rather than defaulting to the built-in output. And if I launch Pro Tools with iTunes open, I'm told that the hardware is already in use. This seems like a clumsy implementation.

Is there a way to juggle core audio more dynamically? Choose the output devices on the fly without quitting apps? I read about an update which allowed more than one app to use hardware, but I can't find any more info.

I thought core audio was supposed to be able to handle similateous audio apps?

I was using Garage Band to plug my bass in last night, while attempting to play along with some songs in iTunes. I had plenty of grief. Every now and then, I'd suddenly get this huge 1/2 second buffer in GB just from switching back and forth between apps. I had to go into the GB prefs and change the input back and forth between internal and my audio card to get it back to normal.

Kind of frustrating, since I can't drag my AAC files into Garage Band 1.1.

It's worked fine with iTunes and Logic Pro 6, though I get sticky buffer overruns that occasionally cause the sound to stutter.

Anyody got an idea on those?

Aside from Garage Band (maybe), none of the apps mentioned in this thread use CoreAudio, to my knowledge. I don't have any explanation, other than to say it's unlikely it has anything to do with CoreAudio.

I've been afraid to use that for fear it would give me greif with Logic, but if it works for you, I might give it a go.

I think one problem might be having "internal audio" set in the output prefs, then switching Garage Band to the PCI sound card from within the App.

i have my usb audio interface set as my main audio in & out...
so i use detour to route everything else (ie preview thru the usb device, but yahoo messenger thru the internal speakers)
