decided to do a fresh system reinstall after a very long time, and the only thing I can't get back working is uw-imapd.
I downloaded UW imap-2004c1, and compiled with make oxp (for PAM).
AFAIK, I have copied all the changes I had before into /etc/xinetd.d but my logins fail
telnet 127.0.0.1 143 Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.
# Escape character is '^]'. OK [CAPABILITY IMAP4REV1 LITERAL+ SASL-IR LOGIN-REFERRALS STARTTLS LOGINDISABLED] localhost IMAP4rev1 2004.357 at Thu, 3 Feb 2005 20:16:35 -0500 (EST) . login zimmy yyy
. NO LOGIN failed
in my syslog I find
Feb 3 20:16:43 localhost imapd[6569]: Login disabled user=zimmy auth=zimmy host=localhost [127.0.0.1]
What have I forgotten to do?
Thanks,
Mike

To enable login authentication
Put in /etc/c-client.cf :
Code:
I accept the risk
set disable-plaintext 0
RTFM - docs/imaprc.txt explains it.

Well I did read the README.. steps 1-6 (#6 says "That's all")... LOL. (my previous insteall did not require this but was several years old)
But this was the ticket. All is working again.
Many many thanks,
Mike

Zim,
Does this work really well for you? I am asking because it really bugs me that Mac OS X Mail does not support my Unix mail spool.
I was going to try getting Dovecot to work but if UW imap works well, maybe I go with that.

My system is this (and I realize this is not what most users would want)....
fetchmail (on a cron job) (ISP POP accts & gmail) -> procmail -> spamassassin -> /var/mail/$USER (unix style mailboxes)
When I am at home, or when I access via ssh, I use elm (I've used it forever and am happy with it). For the occassional attachment, I fire up mutt instead (just haven't fully converted).
When I am on the road, and can't ssh, I hit squirrelmail running on my machine (which I locate via a dyndns addr). I use uw-imapd as the backend for Squirrelmail.
Also I find that at some companies, the firewall is fairly twitchy about ssh access, so I play nice and access via SQM there too.
For me this works great, but I'd never recommend it to a non-unixy person (I do maintenance on my mothers machine via VNC and have her use Mail.app). Also its just me on this... so I can make no statements for/against how this setup would work for a multi-user system.
Until this system reinstall I was running a 2001 version of imapd. Guess I took a big step forward with the 2004 dunno.

Dude! You are hardcore!
That is one serious set up just for personal email.
The coolest thing is that you can do all that on an imac with DSL. It just blows me away.
Have you thought about cyrus instead of uw imapd? I believe it handles mbox.

LOL, nah I'm just old and unwilling to change... plus it makes my system very accessible (to me) no matter where I am (the putty windows ssh client fits on a floppy disk).
Also, the benefits of using the old text mail progs are that I never see image/spam, never need to worry about any virus being delivered via email, nor need to worry about any image/links being followed back to the mail source (and validating my addr to anyone).
Oh, and spamassassin installs well and works easily with this system too.
