I just set up anonymous ftp for someone who's running an
old 10.1 system. Everything seems to work fine: folks can
ftp him jpegs and tiffs and they show up in his /Users/ftp
directory.

I even added a script to convert ownership from "ftp" to
his username.

Trouble is, his system won't open these files.

Supposedly, if the files are emailed to him as attachments,
they can be saved and opened ok.

If I copy one of the jpegs to my flashdrive and put it
onto a Windows XP machine, the picture opens up fine, so
I know the file is OK.

I'm stuck at this point. The guy doesn't want to update
to 10.3, and we've run all the available (and relevant)
OS updates including QuickTime. If anyone has any idea
why a 10.1 system wouldn't open open anonymously ftp'd
.jpg files (or tiffs for that matter), please let me know.

The jpg is uncompressed and is about 10 MB. The tiffs are
much larger.

Thanks,
---J

Has he tried opening the file by going into the application and using the Open dialog? He could always add a Type and Creator (of a Carbon application) with a third party utility, but filename extensions should be working. Why doesn't he want to upgrade? He doesn't have to upgrade to 10.3 - 10.2 offers major improvements over 10.1.

FTP has two transfer modes: ASCII and Binary. These are almost the same, but there's a difference: ASCII mode translates between the different linebreak formats on the client and server machines.

ASCII mode is very convenient when FTPing plain text, but it wreaks havoc on binary files if you use it accidentally. Are you sure that the people uploading to his machine are using binary mode (which is what they should be using)?

Thanks for the reply Big Mac.

I don't think he's running any OS9/Classic apps.

10.2 is not a good option because, from what I understand,
getting anonymous ftp working is much more troublesome in
10.2 than in 10.1 or 10.3.

He doesn't want to upgrade to 10.3 simply because he doesn't
want to spend any more money than he already has getting
this thing set up.

Thanks Millennium. Yeah, we checked that.

Besides, the file opens up fine on the Windows
machine, so I think it actually makes it over
ftp ok and in-tact.

Maybe some bit of metadata is getting lost during
the transfer? Hmm... Running the "file" command
from the Terminal just says it's a normal jpeg.

Also, Big Mac:

No. I'll ask him to try.

Interesting, I wasn't aware of that anonymous FTP setup distinction between the versions. In my previous post I actually meant that he could try using Type and Creator codes with Carbon applications. Not all of them support Type and Creator anymore, since it is has been explicitly depreciated by Apple, but I think many are still Type and Creator aware.
