Hello,
well i was just using my ibook when i noticed the fan came on... i thought what the hell? fan? - it never comes on. so i check activity monitor, and theres this process taking up all my free cpu. its "fsck_msdos". I find this strange because of course, I dont have any dos partitions.

Is it a virus?

I killed it, anyhow... it was running under the user root.

any thoughts?

Who knew that OS X cared about the state of FAT disks? How considerate.

This seems a little strange to me, and unless you have a FAT partition or something of that nature, it shouldn't be happening. Kind of an offhanded question, do you have an iPod that was meant for Windows or Mac? Their disks are FAT32, which would constitute a DOS partition, but checking like that is usually not random... FSCK will normally automatically scan partitions that were subject to an unclean unmount on the next time they're mounted. It just seems strange it would be trying to scan an DOS partition when you may not have one available.

Could it be that you had a digital camera or a flash drive connected? These are FAT partitions too...

You should know better than to assume it's a virus! That's such a Windows habit! :-P

It means that fsck found a FAT partition somewhere or thought that it did, and then started fsck_msdos. Since it's hanging around doing nothing it might be a bug on your HD (you do back your stuff up, don't you?). Make sure you don't have anything inserted or connected when you boot your Mac to make sure there's no possibility of a FAT partition being there somewhere.

Also, check in /etc/fstab if there is an msdos entry. If there is then it's normal that fsck_msdos will be run from time to time. I have an msdos entry in my fstab, for instance although it seems to be a dummy.
