Will Apple ever make an OS that functions like OS 9 but has the features of X? (Page 9)

But, one thing for you to think about for a while... did OS 9 have shell scripts at [all? If not, what exactly are you bitching about?
Errmmm. AppleScript? Handles all those things rather better... and in your new little example, the results still weren't all escaped. Really, if you have a way around the general problem of shell scripts, you need to contact O'Reilly, and tell them to rewrite their book "Internet and UNIX Security."
Please explain why you can't use the same filename on all platforms
Which part of "different compilers on different platforms require different extensions for the same files" are you having trouble understanding?

It took the output and used it, and it worked fine without anything getting mangled, as you can plainly see if you looked at my results. Try it yourself if you don't believe me. Oh, I forgot, you don't use OS X so you can't use shell scripts. I forgot that you only lecture me about them, not necessarily know anything about them. My bad.
Oh, and regarding AppleScript:
1. Yes, it's nifty
2. It's also in OS X
3. It's not for the same purpose as shell scripts

What different platforms are we talking about? Some platform from Mars or something? You'd better have a good example of this, because I've never heard of any such thing.

Duh! When you move your code to a punchcard based platform the file extension no longer works. Silly us!

It did exactly what Charles intended it to do, without (in your words) wreaking havoc on his system or even exhibiting any quirky behavior. If you are convinced that Charles' method is still dangerous, please produce a proof-of-concept exploit to demonstrate the weakness. Because so far Charles has a working script to back up his claims, whereas you've got nothing but some repeated claims. Surely you can see why your position doesn't look very convincing at the moment.

The part I'm not understanding is where you blame the extensions and not the compilers.
I'm also not understanding why you're having a problem with shell scripts - you normally don't blame the hammer when you hit your thumb.

Quick question:
Why the HELL are people still feeding the trolls?????
Time to let this thread die, people.
If they don't get it in 9 pages, they're NEVER going to get it.
Sheesh.

Tell me about it! The OS X zealots are just beyond cure.
They'll never see reason.

Nah, he meant the "OS 9 is better because I say it is, and if you don't agree then you're an idiot!" kind of "reason."

You may complain at me about the freedom of speech, but anyone using the word zealot in a Mac forum must be a troll.
Seriously people--grow up. There's no reason to argue with people that don't know what they are talking about. Some people are ignorant and are unwilling to be educated. You will never change their mind. It's like trying to explain evolution to a creationist. They are unwilling to accept that they are wrong and will fight as hard as they can to not have to change their position.
